How to Join RSJ
Introduction
The Robotics Society of Japan was founded on January 28, 1983 for
purposes of promoting progress in academic fields and providing
specialists with a venue for announcing their research and exchanging
technical information. As of August 2007, RSJ had a total of
approximately 4,300 regular and student members, and 72 groups had
become supporting members. RSJ conducts a wide range of
activities: it publishes
The Journal of the Robotics Society of Japan and RSJfs official international journal,
"Advanced Robotics",
both of which present collections of scientific papers and explanatory
articles about the latest advances in robotics; it holds an g
Annual Conference of the Robotics Society of Japanvh as well as gRobotics Symposiah; it plans and holds
seminarsrelated
to new fields and basic information in robotics; it promotes study and
technology, in fields related to robots, by presenting the Best Paper Awards, Technical Innovation Awards and Young Investigation Excellence Awards
that it has established; and it supports the activities, such as
grobot music,h of specialized research committees. In cooperation
with other academic societies in Japan and overseas, RSJ also supports
symposia. These include IROS, RO-MAN and other international
conferences.
Types of Members
Based on its articles of incorporation, RSJ has four types of
members, as listed in the table below: regular members, student
members, supporting members
, and honorary members. When joining RSJ, regular members, student
members and supporting members do not require an introducer. RSJfs
current membership is composed of people from a wide range of fields,
including researchers, educators, production technology managers,
technical consultants, and people involved in publishing.

by way of a vote at a general meeting. (A regular member who becomes an
honorary member may retain his/her status as a regular member.) |
Benefits
- Regular members and student members are sent 1 free copy of each issue of
the Journal of the Robotics Society of Japan
(which also serves as a journal for essays and sells for 2,500 yen
exclusive of consumption tax). Supporting members are sent 2 free
copies (and 1 additional copy for each unit of membership added).
Regular members may receive, without any addition
to their membership fees, "Advanced Robotics"
(which is only available online.).
- Members
may make presentations at Annual Conferences and Robotics Symposia, and
may submit papers to The Journal of the Robotics Society of Japan
(JRSJ) and Advanced Robotics (AR). Whether to publish submitted papers
will be decided by peer review conducted according to JRSJfs or ARfs
standards. Exceptional papers published in JRSJ or AR will be eligible
for Best Paper Awards
, and presentations made at Annual Conferences or Robotics Symposia will be eligible for
Young Investigation Excellence Awards.
- Members
can participate, at a reduced price, in Annual Conferences, domestic
and overseas symposia, exhibitions, study tours, and other events held
or cosponsored by RSJ. Moreover, the seminars held by RSJ are
especially popular, and individuals belonging to companies or groups
that are supporting members may participate in them for the same price
as members. In addition, each supporting member, for each unit of
membership that it possesses, is given 1 free invitation ticket for
such seminars.
- Supporting members are given discount rates for
advertising in JRSJ.
They are also sent a copy of the proceedings of Annual Conferences at
no charge.
- RSJfs
online search engine
for papers and general articles that have appeared in JSRJ is available
to members and nonmembers alike. However, the IDs necessary to view PDF
files containing these documents are only issued to members.
Membership Fees
Annual membership fees are as shown in the table below. When first
joining RSJ, regular members and student members are charged an
entrance fee of 1,000 yen. There are no charges for the procedures
involved in changing onefs membership status from a student member to
a regular member.

Fill out the necessary parts of the application form inserted in
The Journal of the Robotics Society of Japan or an application form
downloaded from one of the links below, then send the form to RSJ's Administration Office
. If you are unable to obtain an application form, please request one from the Administration Office.

As soon as RSJfs Administration Office checks the membership
application and confirms that the requisite deposit has been made, it
carries out the admission procedures. And with the approval of the
board of directors, the applicant becomes a member.
Additional Information:
- RSJfs accounting and business year is from January to December.
Each yearfs membership fee, valid up through the end of that December,
is to be paid in advance. In case membership is begun in the middle of
the year, a prorated membership fee will be paid for that year. Issues
of JRSJ will be sent, starting with the first issue published after
membership is established. Back numbers from the initial year of
membership will be sent to those who want them only if they are in
stock.
- To eliminate hassles for membership fee payments, RSJ has
established an automatic account-to-account transfer system. If you
wish to use this system, please notify us when you join. (RSJ bears the
service charges for transfers.)
- When joining, members may choose the publication to
which they wish to subscribe, The Journal of the Robotics Society of Japan or Advanced Robotics.
Members who wish to receive both publications should provide notification to that effect.
- Please notify RSJfs Administration Office if your contact
information changes: for example, if you graduated from university and,
as a result, your organizational affiliation has changed to your
employer, or if you have been transferred inside your company. (The
Administration Officefs contact information is as stated below.)
- Should membership fees not be paid, the sending of The
Journal of the Robotics Society of Japan and/or Advanced Robotics will
be discontinued. Should either publication not arrive, please pay your
annual membership fee immediately. Continued nonpayment will result in
expulsion from RSJ.
- Should you wish to withdraw from RSJ for some compelling reason, please notify the Administration Office in writing.

How to Change Membership Status
Should you wish to change your membership status (type of member),
please enter the information mentioned below in an e-mail or a letter,
then send this to the Administration Office as notification of the
change.

The membership fee for the post-change type of member will be
collected in the year (January-December) following notification of the
